Tim Waddington This is one of the best albums I've heard in a long time. The songs have a depth seldom met with these days, the harmonies remind me of Gillian Welsh's best work, and the arrangements - from lush to ultra-percussive, show just what is possible with just a fiddle and a cello. Fantastic! Favorite track: As the Crow Flies.

I've been sailing with the tide Winds of change why do you blow so slow The water is deep as it is wide What I left behind I can't afford to know What I left behind I can't afford to know I've been sailing by the stars By my troubled heart and the pale moonlight The next harbour seems so far I only hope that I survive the night I only hope that I survive the night Got a heavy heart and my pocket’s light Can't wake up in the morning or sleep at night Winds of change why do you blow so slow Can't you see I got a heavy load Been half a year of rolling waves Long been out of anyone to blame Will the land make it all ok Or will it all feel about the same Or will it all feel about the same I've been sailing with the tide Winds of change why do you torture me The water is deep as it is wide What I left behind is pulling me beneath What I left behind is pulling me beneath Can't you see I’ve got miles to go

My heart is sad and I am lonesome For the only one I love When shall I see her, oh no never ’Til we meet in heaven above So bury me beneath the willow Underneath the willow tree So she will know where I am sleeping And perhaps she’ll weep for me She told me that she truly loved me How could I believe it untrue Until the angels softly whispered She will prove untrue to you Tomorrow was to be our wedding God, oh God, where can she be? She’s gone a-courting with another And no longer cares for me

I still see the May snow in the sky Like it was yesterday From early dawn to peaceful night I tunneled in the snow and ice Hold on though I’d often try The ashes of a day gone by Would always slip away I was sure I’d met my bride And that she’d always stay Temptation’s never been so sly I left that angel there to cry No matter how I changed my mind The ashes of a day gone by Would always slip away So when your sense of foolish pride Clings to yesterday While you’re stumbling through the night It’s crystal clear in morning light The day you want is out of sight Though you search with all your might The day you want is out of sight The ashes of a day gone by Would always slip away

Grace 04:05
Heaven knows I don’t believe in heaven But you make me wish that I believed Cause if your time so soon is over Who knows how much is left for me The science of fate, my momma taught me What’s meant to be will be But there’s no sense and there’s no reason In your end that I can see Grant me grace to learn how to pray Not to god, but to the rest of my days Grant me grace Where did your dreams go when you left them On your nightstand to sleep Are they gone or do they live on With the ones you love, your soul they keep You know I can’t believe in heaven But I wish to god I could believe Cause if someone so good could die so young What chance in hell is left for me

I like to think I’m moving slowly But maybe I’m not moving at all Is there somewhere I can get a bird’s eye view? All these twists and turns Have I gotten any further, it seems Like I’m always on the road to somewhere new As the crow flies It doesn’t seem so far from A to B As the crow flies The finish line’s a place that I can see And as the crow flies You wouldn’t see me trapped in this old maze But I am no crow And my worries are as long as my days Should I stop driving for a while These roads all feel like circles to me Please believe me, I’m doing my best Think I’ll pull off on the shoulder Close my eyes for just a moment or so Don’t get me wrong, I just need some rest As the crow flies It doesn’t seem so far from a to b As the crow flies The finish line’s a place that I can see And as the crow flies You wouldn’t see me trapped in this old maze But I am no crow And my worries are as long as my days

Glass 03:19
There was a time when my chest would cave in At the sight of your smile or the touch of your skin We were brand new, crystalline Nothing I wouldn't do to see it shine When I think of you now, my heart doesn’t turn My stomach doesn't pound, my lips don’t burn Time is a window, clarity It pulls back the curtains, now I see Glass will shatter when it hits the ground It don’t matter, it’ll shatter, oh the sound It’s the sound of over, over and out No matter how much I filled up your cup A glass half empty was never enough I think we always knew we were walking a line Between a match and kerosene, it was a matter of time A bird in a cage I sat on on your throne I thought you were a king but I was wrong

Samson 03:30
You are my sweetest downfall I loved you first, I loved you first Beneath the sheets of paper lies my truth I have to go, I have to go Your hair was long when we first met Samson went back to bed Not much hair left on his head He ate a slice of wonder bread, and went right back to bed And history books forgot about us and the Bible didn't mention us And the Bible didn't mention us, not even once You are my sweetest downfall I loved you first, I loved you first Beneath the stars came fallin' on our heads But they're just old light, they're just old light Your hair was long when we first met Samson came to my bed Told me that my hair was red Told me I was beautiful, and came into my bed Oh, I cut his hair myself one night A pair of dull scissors in the yellow light And he told me that I'd done alright And kissed me till the mornin' light, the mornin' light And he kissed me till the mornin’ light Samson went back to bed Not much hair left on his head He ate a slice of wonder bread, and went right back to bed Oh, we couldn't bring the columns down Yeah, we couldn't destroy a single one And history books forgot about us And the Bible didn't mention us, not even once You are my sweetest downfall I loved you first

45 04:07
You saddled up your horses And loaded up your guns You promised all those wayward souls First place in a race they'd never run You stormed into the city With an army at your back Chanting your last name You gave the signal for attack You can run your mouth but you can't outrun it You can steal a crown, don't mean you've won it You can lie in circles like a snake eating its tail The truth may bend but it won't break and it'll never be for sale You tore down all the buildings The ones built just before You came into town And began this unholy war You commandeered their voices Said it was for their sake "I'm the one who's sent to you to make this country great”

I’ll be a bear in a den I’ll be a bear in a den I ain’t waking up until god knows when I’ll be a bear in a den I’ll be an ant in a hill I’ll be an ant in a hill If I don’t take what’s mine, somebody else will There’s a world out there that I don’t need to know There are far off lands but I don’t need to go I can hide in plain sight if my eyes are closed I’ll be a bear in a den I’ll be a bee in a hive I’ll be a bee in a hive If I’m mad I’ll sting, don’t care if I’m alive I’ll be a bird in a tree I’ll be a bird in a tree Nobody I can see can sing as loud as me I’ll be a hamster in a wheel I’ll be a hamster in a wheel Just a few more strides and I’ll take my next meal I’ll be a lemming in a line I’ll be a lemming in a line If I’m doing what I’m told it’ll turn out fine
